TRUSTED CARE for breast disease and cancer

Breast health is an area of concern for every woman, unique from other healthcare needs. It’s an incredibly sensitive issue and you deserve a medical professional who treats it that way. In addition to Dr. McRae’s advanced surgical capabilities, he understands that providing you with support and reassurance is extremely important.

He’ll take the time to answer your questions, address your concerns and explain your options in detail. You’ll find Dr. McRae offers the latest biopsy methods and provides patients with the most effective, conservative surgical approaches that can achieve optimum cosmetic results.
  • Mammotome® biopsy: A minimally invasive breast biopsy that’s performed in under an hour and requires no stitches. The biopsy involves the one-time insertion of an ultrasound-guided probe directly into the area of the breast that appeared suspicious based on a physical exam or an abnormal mammogram finding. Once inside, the probe gently vacuums out suspicious tissue for analysis.
  • VACORA® “bandaid” needle biopsy: Uses a fine needle and vacuum to take tissue samples on an outpatient basis without surgery or stitches. A simple bandaid is all that is needed after surgery. Most women are able to resume their normal activities immediately.
  • Sentinel Node biopsy: To prevent the unnecessary removal of lymph nodes in breast cancer and melanoma patients, a sample of tissue is taken from just one or two lymph nodes to determine if cancer has spread to the lymphatic system. The result is a smaller incision, less swelling and a faster recovery time.
  • Lymphatic mapping: To identify the lymph nodes, a mapping agent is injected into the lymph system surrounding a breast tumor.
  • Lumpectomy: An alternative to mastectomy, when appropriate, this procedure allows for a more cosmetically appealing result while achieving high rates of successful cancer control.
  • MammoSite® 5-day targeted radiation therapy: A small, soft balloon attached to a thin tube is placed inside the space created by the tumor’s removal. A tiny radiation source, called a “seed,” is placed within the balloon by a computer-controlled machine. Patients receive 10 treatments over five days. Most women feel little or no discomfort either during treatment or when the balloon is removed at the end of the five days.
Dr. McRae stays at the forefront of breast care and has helped bring new breast-saving technologies to the St. Petersburg area. He was one of the first area physicians to offer MammoSite therapy, Mammotome biopsy and in-office ultrasound. You can count on him to keep offering the latest breast-saving innovations as they develop.

TRUSTED CARE for thyroid and parathyroid problems

Tumors and other thyroid diseases are treated with the latest minimally invasive techniques, including the ultrasonic Harmonic Scalpel®. Dr. McRae is also experienced in minimal nuclear localization to accurately identify and remove tumors of the parathyroid gland.

TRUSTED CARE for gallbladder disease

If surgery is required, Dr. McRae can perform laparoscopic cholecystectomy, an advanced alternative to traditional open surgery. Using a special camera-equipped scope, Dr. McRae can see inside the abdomen to remove a diseased gallbladder. In some cases, however, the traditional approach is more appropriate and utilized when it is in your best interests to do so.

TRUSTED CARE for dialysis access maintenance

People with kidney failure must have regular dialysis treatments to prevent waste products from building up in their blood. Dr. McRae has helped thousands of area residents with kidney failure get the dialysis treatments they need by creating a vascular access path, also known as a shunt.
